Apple introduced the ability to make third party web browsers set as default browsers in iOS and iPad OS 14 to google chrome, firefox etc. So it was pretty great to use our favourite browsers like google chrome to be our default go-to browser instead of Safari.
What’s the problem?
But there is a problem with the Google Chrome browser for iPadOS that it would still open mobile sites by default unlike the Safari and Mozilla Firefox browser which opens all the websites in their Desktop version by default. Well, you can still open the Desktop version of all sites by manually clicking on the Open Desktop version every time on every site.
But what if there was a way to make it default just by changing one setting in chrome. After doing this you will always see that Chrome for iPad OS now opens all website in their desktop version.
Steps to make chrome open Desktop sites by default.
- Make sure the chrome is updated.
- Open Chrome and search chrome://flags in the URL search bar
- You will open a window with a heading called Experiments and a search bar on top of the page.
- Here search for Desktop.
- Now you will see a heading called Request desktop version by default and there will be a drop-down menu in front of it.
- It will be set to default but you have to touch it and click Enable.
- Now restart the chrome browser and now you will see that all the websites now open in Desktop version by default.

You can watch the video too.
In my iPad air 4 running iPadOS 14.4.1 I am opening my own website techelucidations.com in chrome.
As I have installed a mobile theme with AMP integration on this website, It will load the mobile version with AMP and then we will have to toggle the open desktop site toggle.

Now even if we open Posts then it opens the AMP version and not the Desktop version.

So to make the chrome to open desktop site by default in chrome is to follow these steps.
- Open chrome and search for chrome://flags

- In the Experiments section search for Desktop.

- In the search result there will be first option which states Request desktop version by default and there will be a drop-down menu in front of it.

- It will be set to default but you have to touch it and click Enable.

Now restart the chrome browser and you will notice that the websites now open in Desktop mode by default. So let’s open our website once again.

Now let’s open the post and see what happens.

So this is how you can make the chrome browser in iPadOS to open all sites in Desktop version by default.
